Cyanotype Printing in Kraków

Cyanotype is one of the earliest photographic printing techniques, producing distinctive deep blue and white images using light-sensitive chemistry and UV light.

At Formowanie, cyanotype can be used to create prints on paper, fabric, T-shirts, tote bags and other suitable materials. Designs can be made using plants, leaves, photographs, drawings, transparencies, found objects and experimental compositions, making the process easy to explore while still offering plenty of creative possibilities.

We have a dedicated UV exposure unit for consistent results, but cyanotypes can also be exposed naturally using sunlight — part of what makes the technique so simple and enjoyable to experiment with.

Cyanotype Workshops for Kids & Adults

Our cyanotype workshops in Kraków are suitable for both children and adults and are designed as a practical introduction to photographic printmaking.

Participants learn how light-sensitive materials work, how to arrange objects or prepare images, expose the print and develop the characteristic blue result using water.

For children, cyanotype is an especially accessible way to combine art, photography, nature and experimentation. Leaves, flowers, shapes and everyday objects can be used to create unique prints without needing complicated equipment.

Adults can explore the process in more detail using photographic negatives, graphic artwork, textiles and layered compositions to create prints, clothing and decorative pieces.

Make Cyanotypes at Home

If you want to continue experimenting after a workshop, cyanotype kits are available from the Formowanie store.

The kits contain the materials needed to start making cyanotypes at home. You do not need an exposure machine — prints can be exposed outdoors using sunlight and then developed with water.

For more controlled or repeatable results, Formowanie also has a UV exposure unit available in the studio.

Cyanotype Practical Information

Is cyanotype suitable for children?

Yes. Cyanotype is particularly well suited to children because the process is visual, experimental and produces results relatively quickly. Workshops are adapted to the age of the participants.

Can adults join the workshops?

Yes. Adult workshops can explore more advanced image preparation, photographic negatives, textile printing and experimental techniques.

What can I print on?

Cyanotype works particularly well on paper and natural fabrics such as cotton, including T-shirts and tote bags. Different surfaces can produce different results.

Do cyanotypes need sunlight?

No. Cyanotypes simply need a suitable source of UV light. At Formowanie we can use a controlled exposure unit, while cyanotypes made at home can be exposed using natural sunlight.

Can I buy materials to make cyanotypes myself?

Yes. Cyanotype kits are available through the Formowanie store so you can continue experimenting at home.
